FAQs
You can reach out to the Shift team by emailing [email protected]. Our Conference Director, Preet Singh, and our Operations Coordinators, Erin Valoroso and Gianni Diarbi, are dedicated to ensuring the conference is accessible to everyone. Additionally, you may fill out the accessibility form below, which is also linked in the ticket registration, if you require specific accommodations, including mobility assistance, ASL interpretation, captioning, dietary restrictions, or any other support. We want to make sure your experience at Shift is as comfortable as possible!
Live captioning via CART will be provided for all rooms hosting keynote talks, panels, and workshops. Due to limited resources as a student-led organization, we are unable to offer ASL interpretation at this time, as we have not received advance requests for this accommodation. However, if you require ASL interpretation or any other specific accommodations, please contact us, and we will do our best to find options that meet your needs.
Northeastern University's Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is easily accessible by public transport. Both the Commuter Rail and the Orange Line stop at Ruggles Station. If you are using the Green Line (approximately 0.3 miles from ISEC), you can cut through Northeastern University and access ISEC via the Columbus Parking Lot or through the ISEC pedestrian bridge, both equipped with either ramps or elevators.
From Ruggles Station, you can exit onto Columbus Avenue at Ruggles Station for the quickest route to ISEC. The most wheelchair-accessible route from Ruggles is to exit onto Forsyth Street, cut through Northeastern University, and use the elevator near the Snell Library to reach the ISEC pedestrian bridge, which connects directly to the building.
Parking is available at the Renaissance, Gainsborough, or West Village Garages.
Additionally, buses that arrive at Ruggles Station (approximately 0.1 miles from ISEC) include: CT2, CT3, 8, 9, 15, 19, 22, 23, 28, 43, 44, 45, and 47.
The conference will take place in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) at Northeastern University, a six-story building housing labs, classrooms, offices, and research facilities. However, the event will only be held on the first floor, including the open atrium, three classrooms, and the auditorium. Located at 805 Columbus Ave, ISEC has two entrances: one from the ISEC pedestrian bridge connecting to the rest of Northeastern's campus (this entrance leads to the second floor, so you'll need to take the stairs or elevator down to check in), and the other directly on Columbus Ave. The conference space will be quiet and comfortable, with the central atrium extending through all six floors and large windows allowing for ample natural light throughout the venue
Yes, we have over 25 student volunteers available to assist attendees with disabilities, including navigation, meal service, or any other accessibility needs. If you require volunteer assistance, please indicate this on the accommodations form linked earlier on this page. If you are bringing a personal care assistant, they are welcome to attend at no additional cost. Please just let the check-in guest know. Student volunteers will be easily identifiable by distinct conference-branded t-shirts, and you will be briefed at registration on who they are and what they're wearing.
Yes, the conference will be fully accessible to wheelchair users. All major entrances to the building are equipped with push-to-open activation switches. If you're using the ISEC pedestrian bridge to arrive, an elevator near Snell Library will take you to the bridge that connects to the building's entrance. The building is equipped with elevators and accessible restrooms. Classrooms and the auditorium will have open doors, with student volunteers stationed nearby to ensure easy access to all sessions. Wheelchair users will have access to the first row of the auditorium via accessible ramps, and this row will be reserved for their use. Additionally, there will be low seating and accessible wheelchair table options available for attendees throughout the event.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of food options provided by Northeastern Catering. Breakfast will include an assortment of freshly baked pastries and sliced fresh fruit platters. A water station will also be available for refreshments. For lunch, a classic sandwich buffet will be provided, featuring turkey and provolone, ham and Swiss, and heirloom tomatoes with fresh mozzarella on assorted breads. The meal will be accompanied by house-made potato chips, mixed green salad with red wine vinaigrette, pickles, and an assortment of cookies. Additionally, a water station will be available to keep guests hydrated. Dessert will consist of gluten-free brownies.
For any dietary concerns or further inquiries, please reach out via email at [email protected].
To ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees, participants will be asked to refrain from using flash photography or wearing strong scents. If you have any specific sensory concerns, please note them on the accommodations form, and we'll make every effort to address them. Our Media team will be instructed to avoid flash photography. The auditorium is typically dimly lit, while the classrooms are well-lit with ample natural light and non-fluorescent, non-strobe white lighting. There will be no loud music during the conference.
Yes, quiet spaces can be found on the upper levels of the ISEC building. Floors 2 to 6 can be used to escape the noise and activity of the event. Wayfinding signs and conference volunteers will assist you in reaching the elevators.
The conference will require minimal walking, as all presentations are located on the same first floor of the ISEC building. All events will take place in four rooms, which are very close to one another, as well as in the central atrium that connects them. Accessible seating will be provided in each room and in the atrium to ensure comfort throughout the day.
Wayfinding will lead attendees to accessible restrooms. While all restrooms on the first floor have accessible stalls, there is a more private and accessible family bathroom.
